Chapter 17

Lucy changed out of her riding habit and freshened up. She found the most flattering dress she owned. The sapphire silk with ruffles. It brought out the color of her eyes and accentuated her curves. She felt a little daring when she wore that dress. Secretly, she’d been saving it for the day she knew she would see Walter.

It was perfect for today.

She smiled at everything. Everyone. The grooms. The footmen. Her abigail. It was the most beautiful day. The most wonderful tea. Peter was the kindest, most gentle, most wonderful man alive.

She was in love.

Lucy found Mrs. Glenn and allowed her to tell her about the Roman occupation of Germany until Rachel and Alice arrived home from class.

“The ‘General’ insists we check on our widow,” Rachel said. “And Alice insists on staying home.”

“I do not attend births,” Alice said. “My brother knows I will tolerate everything else. I moved from London to Germany for him. I am training as a nurse. I will help Miss Nightingale establish her school. But I draw the line there. No deliveries.”

“And births are my specialty,” Rachel said. “So I will train Miss Nightingale’s students in that area. You need not come. I will tell your brother.”

“He hates it when you call him ‘General’ instead of Colonel,” Alice said.

Rachel smiled. “And that is why I do it. Lucy? Will you come? Her time must be very close. I’ve been worrying about her all week.”

Lucy felt guilty. She hadn’t thought about Cecelia nearly as much as she should have. At least she had sent the linens, the candles, tea, tobacco for her father, fresh fruits, and vegetables from the marketplace. “Of course. I’ll leave a note with the footmen.”

“For Peter?” Rachel asked.

Lucy nodded. “He is coming this evening. Perhaps this afternoon. What about Eleanor? She would want to meet Cecelia. Shall we invite her as well, since Alice is not coming?”
